Sewickley Farmers' Market Today!

LFLF was in the Ambridge/Sewickley area this morning and we made a stop at the Sewickley Farmers' Market.  We first visited this market in 2008 and things are still going strong.   There are lots of local food & value-added food product vendors, but of course, the produce farmers are the backbone of any market.  We got strawberries, snow peas, cucumbers, & Pennsylvania maple syrup.  Cabbage, lettuces, onions, garlic, rhubarb, basil, & other herbs were in abundance! 

This market has a couple of greenhouse growers, so new summer squash, zucchini, and greenhouse tomatoes were also available.  More of our area growers are using high tunnels & greenhouses to try & satisfy the market for fresh local veggies early in the season.
Sewickley is a great place to buy local beef, lamb, chicken, & chevon. 

Our friend Lynne of Dream Thyme Farm sells lamb & chevon and has a message to all the eaters out there!

LFLF was out and about this weekend gathering greens .... or should we say buying greens from the farmers who gathered them?!?  The peas were delicious steamed with just a touch of real butter.  The romaine lettuce is on the menu for tomorrow and we're thinking about chopped, sauteed garlic scapes in smashed potatoes ..... :)

The garlic scapes came from the Beaver Farmers' Market today.  It definitely took a bit of effort to get to the market since Beaver, PA was hosting the popular Garrison Day Festival.  Parking was tight all over town and you had to swim with the crowds.

LFLF also took the opportunity to support the local arts scene ......  While winding our way back to our parking spot, we bought this beautiful fruit & veggie still life.  Artist Irene Ackerman of Baden, PA, is shown holding her watercolor.  It will be perfect for the kitchen!

Beaver Farmer's Market Opens



Enon Country Garden - Lots of Potted Plants

The Beaver Farmer's Market opened today for another season in the parking lot behind the Beaver County Courthouse.  There were lots of shoppers for plants and hanging baskets ..... Mother's Day tomorrow probably had something to do with that!  Vendors today included Wood Street Bakery with their excellent breads, McCormack Apiaries with honey & beeswax products, Littell Fudge, and Pat's Pastries.  Greenhouse potted plants, herbs, veggie flats & Amish baked goods rounded out the selection.
AND ........ we had sunshine for a change!

Easter @ Janoski's Greenhouse!

LFLF went shopping for Easter flowers on Saturday and Janoski's Farm & Greenhouse did not disappoint!  The Easter mums are gorgeous, just remember that they're not hardy mums.  Along with the traditional Easter lilies, there were hydrangeas, tulips, hyacinths, & azaleas.  Plenty of people were just wandering around trying to make a decision ..... what to buy?

Spring Is In The Air!

Look at what's available now at the greenhouses!  We stopped at Janoski's Farm & Greenhouse today to look at Easter flowers.  The Easter lillies aren't open yet --- still a week early for that, but the pansies & violas outside under the shed roof were in full bloom!   There are also flats of lettuces and onions ready to go.  The lettuce would still need a cold frame or some shelter, but the onions could go out now if you're inspired to get started in the garden .....
