Mountain Fresh Farmers' Market - Tomato, Lettuce, Peppers
Here'a a look at what is in season at the Mountain Fresh Farmers' Market in Oakland, Maryland.  LOTS of veggies, plus cut flowers, meats, and other local vendors with candles, soaps, handcrated wooden puzzles/baskets/cutting boards/rolling pins, woven rag rugs, baked goods, jams/jellies, and woolen products.  Click on the pictures to enlarge!
Possum Tail Farm Grass Finished Beef
LFLF spent a few minutes chatting with the folks from Possum Tail Farm about their cattle.  You can see that they've gone through the commitment to become a Certified Naturally Grown farm.  That's no small accomplishment!  Stop in and ask them how they came up with the farm name ... :)
Tomatoes, Beets, 3 Varieties of Beans (!), Tomatoes, & Cut Flowers
We bought a variety of tomatoes from this farm & then we made a nice tomato & shredded cheese salad out of them for dinner!

Labor Day Weekend At Mountain Fresh Farmers' Market!

On The Road To Mountain Fresh Farmers' Market - Maryland With Pride
LFLF returned from a weekend trip and we made sure to visit the Mountain Fresh Farmers' Market in Oakland, Maryland.  When we arrived, the folks in the pop-up tent on the right below were giving out fresh sweetcorn to the shoppers.  Yum!

The parking lot was near capacity and the folks looked to be buying a little of everything ... in preparation for weekend cookouts?

Mountain Fresh @ Oakland, MD!

Lined Up For Peaches & Apples!
LFLF took a day trip on Saturday to Deep Creek Lake & had a chance to stop in again at the Mountain Fresh Farmers' Market in Oakland, Maryland.  The market opens at 10AM and we got there around 11AM, so there were still a lot of folks shopping.  The orchard had customers waiting in line for peaches & apples the whole time we were there.  Several vendors had blueberries & raspberries.

Shopping For Veggies
A couple of the vendors had pictures of their farms and it seems that many have high tunnels.  In chatting a little, it seems that they are also "ahead of schedule" on many crops.
Alpaca & Wensleydale (!) Fiber and Yarn
This market is in a tourist area, so there are about 8 booths that are local arts & crafts ..... rag rugs, felting & fiber art, photography, fine wood turning, yarn, and soaps & candles.
Pound Cake & Ginger Snaps - Mmmmmm!
The market also has several vendors who also sell baked goods.  LFLF picked up the last lemon pound cake and a couple of bags of ginger snaps (one of our favorites!) from the same lady we 've purchased from in the past.  Both goodies were excellent!
This true "tail-gate" market is in the shade and it's a good thing!  Temperatures climbed up to 100 degrees on Saturday ...... on our way back home in the afternoon, the truck registered 104 degrees on I68 & again on I79!   Wow.

More From Mountain Fresh!

On Saturday we spent some time talking to several vendors, but also talked with a local 4-H leader and 4-H members selling hotdogs, water & pop, and reusable market bags.  Hats off to the leaders who work with the kids and to the 4-Hers in our communities.  They have some great projects and they learn teamwork and leadership skills as they go along.
There was a small group around the FireFly Farms table talking to the vendor and sampling cheeses.  Luckily we planned ahead and came to market with a small cooler.  It seems that more markets are featuring local meat & cheese, so come prepared!  LFLF opted for a very dry cheese, FireFly Farms Bella Vita, with plans to grate it onto pasta dishes, fresh broccoli, & cauliflower.  Apparently, this cheese has a long aging period and it will only be available for a short time before it's sold out for the season.  We'll try something different on our next visit.
In a separate bag, of course, we picked up a bar of goats's milk soap in coconut from PugRidge Place .  Here's another 4-H project that looks like it kept growing!

Foodie Travels!

Last weekend, your roaming blogger made a visit to a new "local" venue.  During a visit to Deep Creek Lake,  LFLF made sure to visit the Oakland, MD Mountain Fresh Farmers' Market on Saturday.  It was a glorious summer day and the market was full of customers.  The vendors set up around the outside of the pavillion in a true "tailgate" style, while other vendors set up on center aisle tables.
This is a producer only market and it also contains lots of baked goods, handwoven rag rugs, felted woolen products, herb & nursery plants, jams & jellies, goats milk soaps, and a 4-H food booth.  We enjoyed chatting with many of the vendors!
LFLF walked away with a delicious coconut cake from Grace of Kitzmiller, MD and 2 pints of blueberries from the opposite side of the building.  In fact, I paid for the cake and asked Grace to put it back while I visited the rest of the market ..... it would have been GONE if I waited!   We also picked up onions, a bar of goat milk soap, a felted woolen "man in the moon" Christmas ornament, and a wedge of goat milk cheese.
BackBone Food Farm  had some beautiful Swiss Chard as well as the onions!

More pictures to follow, plus how to deal with a sticky market issue ..... stay tuned!
