Canfield Fair Orchard Display

Canfield Fair Orchard Display
If you're over the PA border near Salem or Lisbon, Ohio, these would be great farms to visit!
Click on the picture for location details ... this is one of our favorite competition displays at the Canfield Fair.
See Building 26 - Fruit, Hay, & Grain.    Beautiful apples!  Tradition also says that you have to try the cold apple cider for sale near the display.
This same building also has the honey & beeswax competition (with local honey/products for sale), wine competion, and new this year, a "home brew" competition ...

New Apples

McConnells' Farm Driveway
The "goal" of the mid-week stop today at McConnells' Farm was to get some peppers & onions for a batch of stuffed peppers.  Mission accomplished.  We also added sweet corn, nectarines, Brunton Dairy ice cream, and apples to the cart.   "Golden Supreme" is an apple variety that was new to LFLF, but they looked great, so we grabbed a bag to try them out.

They are exactly what the sign says - crisp & firm fleshed.  Very tasty.  See the blue ribbon in the background?  That was from the Gala apple entry by McConnells' Farm at the local Hookstown Fair last week ...

Busy Market Day

Custom Arrangement By Ridgemont Farms
We can't complain about the weather at the Beaver Farmers' Market on Saturday.  It was mild and really sunny, so LFLF got a couple of pictures in to share.  The crowd kept walking in front of the camera too ... sheesh!
Cabbages are in!
LFLF picked up sweet corn, one of the purple cabbages, green peppers, and some peanut butter cookies.   The cabbage is really fresh & has a sweet flavor at this time of year!

McConnells' Farm Apples Are Starting

McConnells' Farm - Apple Crates & Pickers' Bag
Here's a little of what's going on outside of the market at McConnells' Farm.  The early apples have started and right now there are McIntosh apples for sale in the market.  The cool rainy weather we're having makes a nice apple dessert sound good!
Starting To Pick Apples
If you haven't seen anyone picking apples before, note the tripod style fruit picking ladder.  It makes it possible to get closer to the trees to pick and it provides a sturdier base.
McConnells' Farm Apple Tree
How about the fruit on this apple tree?  These were along the driveway & LFLF can't "name that apple", but I bet a McConnell family member would know by just glancing at them!  :)

What's Up At McConnells' Farm?

Following The Signs To McConnells' Farm !
LFLF hadn't been to McConnells' Farm for a couple of years ... due to a major bridge closing in the area, the detour home from work eliminated travel past this farm in season.   :(
What a nice surprise when I visited on Saturday.  A relocated & restored barn is now the focal point of the farm market!   LFLF even got a chance to go upstairs to shoot a few pictures from the (as yet unopened) 2nd floor.  Thank you Mr. McConnell for recognizing a fellow barn enthusiast!

McConnells' Farm - Apples, Peaches, & Nectarines
We circled the market and picked up sweet corn, a cantaloupe, tomatoes, nectarines, and a container of ice cream from Brunton Dairy, another local farm.

We also spotted some great handcrafted soaps ... loved the smell of the Clove Soap ... maybe on the next trip!

In The Market @ Wyebrook Farm

Wyebrook Farm - Meat & Dairy Case
Here we are back inside the Wyebrook Farm Market.  This is the upstairs of the converted barn and the display cases are top notch.  Click on the pics to get a closer look at their offerings ... the word "artisan" comes to mind.   The meat, eggs , & dairy items are in a couple of cases surrounding the meat cutting & service area.
Wyebrook Farm - Specialty Value Added Meat Items
Since we were planning a trip to Valley Forge, we didn't bring a cooler with us, so we had to pass on anything that needed refrigeration this time. :(
"But wait, there's more" ... LFLF didn't leave empty handed after the delicious lunch.

Organic Peppers & Heirloom Tomatoes
Local Honey - Click Picture To Read Labels
This is definitely a place LFLF would like to visit again.  Maybe reservations for a local dinner next time we're in town???
Oh yea, and that Valley Forge trip?  It capped an already great day!

LFLF Visits Wyebrook Farm!

Wyebrook Farm Cafe Menu Board
What did you do on your summer vacation?  LFLF put Wyebrook Farm on our "must see" agenda after reading an article in Lancaster Farming this spring.  While visiting Chester County on Saturday, we stopped in the Honey Brook area for lunch at the Wyebrook Farm Cafe' and then shopped in the market.
Wyebrook Farm Cafe Patio Tables & Live Music
It was overcast, but the rain held off and we joined the crowd for a nice lunch under the umbrellas.  The band was in the back building under shelter...
Pulled Pork Sandwich & Ginger Lime Fizz ... Mmmmm!
After we enjoyed the music & finished lunch, we went upstairs to the top of the converted barn to check out the market.  Here's the view out over the patio and pond ... there is a trail off to the right where you can walk around some of the pasture areas.

Inside of the barn is the market and a wonderful dining area.  Reservations are required for dinner seating!
