Fresh Picked Black & Red Raspberries At Beaver Farmers' Market

Now the raspberries are in season and LFLF had to get three containers for a pie .... we'll add these to some home grown sour cherries for a cherry/berry pie!

We also got some of the beets for dinner later in the week ....... one of the customers was getting a bunch of each to make a beet salad.

It was light jacket weather for most people Saturday morning since the sun stayed behind overcast skies.  LFLF got to the market a little late after parking on the other side of Beaver and weaving our way through the "Garrison Day" crowds.  We mostly browse the antiques and art booths ......

Dalton Dari-ette - Our Choice!

LFLF has been quite busy lately & has not been "in town" lately to shop the local farmers' markets.  But that doesn't stop us from supporting local businesses.  We were returning from the Great Lakes Fiber Show in Wooster, Ohio on Saturday when we decided to try the Dalton Dari-ette on US Route 30.  We were not disappointed.  You place your order and are given a number to hold.  You can wait in your car or just wait around outside.  When your order is ready, they hang your number in the side window.  When you see your number posted, go to any window to pick up your order and turn in your number plaque ......

We had a BBQ sandwich, fries, a cheesburger with mustard & onions, & a side of onion rings with a nice light batter breading.   Mmmmmm.
Bonus - right behind the parking lot is a pole building shelter where the Amish park a buggy & sell local produce in season ..... or as this weekend, hanging baskets & flats of annuals & veggie plants!

Beaver County Farmers Market Are Open!

What a beautiful day for the Beaver Farmers' Market to open!  Sunny & high 50's today.
We saw lots of hanging baskets, bedding plants, herbs, & veggie plants for the gardeners.  New vendors at Beaver included a local winery and a local beef producer.  More on them in upcoming weeks when LFLF gets a chance to talk to them!

Beautiful Violets & Mint for Derby Day!

Of course, farmer Becky had her bunches of mint ready for Kentucky Derby Day Mint Juleps.
She also had violets to transplant into your lawn or garden .... that should bring a smile to your face in the spring time!

LFLF made a beeline for the holiday cookies and some potatoes at the Beaver Farmers' Market last Saturday.  The weather was surprisingly warm for this time of year & kids to grandparents were out enjoying the day.

There are 2 more markets left for the season - December 8th and December 15th.  There are also fresh wreaths & swags for sale from May-Malone Farm and plenty of winter squash available to create a stash of long keepers for the winter.

Farming & Deer Damage

Among other things, LFLF got a couple of small squashes last weekend ..... You're heard of personal pan pizzas?  These are personal roasting pan squashes!  Anyway, one of the things we also noticed were some of the deer damaged winter squashes at the market.

The veggies are perfectly fine to buy & cook, but you can imagine the disappointment in finding these in the field.  Just one of the many things that can go wrong during the growing season.  The deer don't care about all of the hard work that goes into growing these beauties!   Anyway if it's any consolation, the opening day  of deer season for the majority of hunters in Pennsylvania is Monday the 26th.  Most farmers welcome respectful hunters if you've made yourself known & asked permission before deer season. 

Catching Up - Last Saturday!

LFLF is finally catching up to cover our visit last Saturday to the Beaver Farmers' Market.   The weather was dry instead of rainy like it had been all week.  We had in the neighborhood of 5 - 6 inches of rain ..... at least it came over 4 or 5 days!

LFLF was in line right behind this customer for a couple of heads of broccoli & then we moved on for some carrots from another farmer.  It's past Halloween and most of the customers were focused on apples. winter squash, cabbages, lettuce, greens, baked goods, & bread.

The only disappointment of the day was that there was no apple cider to be had!  :(
Seems that some of the farms had bad luck with apples this year, so cider apples - usually seconds - were in shorter supply .......
