Good Stuff At Sewickley Farmers' Market!

Exchange At The Sewickley Farmers' Market!
LFLF went to the Sewickley Farmers' Market this morning specifically to get some notecards from the Karen Sandorf Gallery.  Her email blast said she'd be there under the green striped umbrella, so mission accomplished.  We picked out some new cards that include native Pawpaw & Sugar Maple illustrations & recipies.   The Sewickley market is known for having an ecclectic collection of goodies and today did not disappoint!  We got some great biscotti & lady locks, then headed around the market picking up produce.
Clarion River Organics Heirloom Tomato Selection
We picked up some red & yellow organic pear tomatoes from Clarion River Organics.   You can just see the beautiful eggplants and squash blossoms with their Heirloom Tomatoes in the picture above.
Ground Cherries & Tomatillos From Clarion River Organics
LFLF came home with some staple veggies - sweet corn, green peppers, cucumbers, & garlic.
Of course, the garlic was a world of it's own too! We came across a wonderful display of garlic varieties from Enon Valley Garlic.

When you buy a clove, it's packed in a little paper bag with the variety name written on it. Many customers buy this locally raised garlic to plant in their own gardens.  LFLF selected "Polish" garlic today ........

Stuffed Peppers ......

Pan Of Stuffed Peppers!
LFLF has been working on this pan of stuffed peppers all week.  There were 2 more full sized peppers in another smaller pan & they were the first to go!  This is the kind of food that tastes better when it's re-heated.   Tricks to this recipe?  It calls for tomato sauce - substitute spaghetti sauce.  It calls for rice - substitute spanish rice.  Spanish rice calls for chopped tomatoes - substitute stewed tomatoes.  It calls for mozerella cheese - substitute specialty Italian cheese blend!  :)  We'll be on the prowl for more local sweet peppers this weekend.

PDA Secretary Greig At Beaver Farmers' Market!

Celebrating 30 Years!
The Beaver County Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association continues to celebrate their 30th year of bringing strictly local produce to the Beaver County community.  Today, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary George Greig visited the Beaver Farmers' Market with State Senator Elder Vogel, Jr..  The weather was beautiful and the market was packed!
Customers Crowd The Market
The market has long been supported by the Beaver County Commissioners and of course is held in the Beaver County Courthouse parking lot.

Looking Over The Peppers!
LFLF picked up potatoes, bell peppers for stuffing, sweet onions, apples, & sweetcorn.  Several of the farmers had raspberries, elderberries, blueberries, and peaches.  Garlic, hot peppers, pickling cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, green beans, wax beans, & dillweed could all be had if you plan on canning!

Now For Beaver On Saturday!

Beaver Farmers' Market - Jackets & Sweatshirts!
We're finally getting caught up on the blog .....  LFLF zipped through the Beaver Farmers' Market on Saturday early while we were out running errands.   It was rather cool in the morning so everyone was wearing layers on top, but some hardy souls still had on shorts!  Since it was a bit crowded, we took a different approach and tried to sneak in pictures of the purchases being made ....
Buying Baked Goods At Pat's Pastries
Buying Beets At Oak Spring Farm
Buying Peaches At McConnells' Farm
Buying Peppers At Douds-Floyd Farm
Buying Sweetcorn At Swicks' Orchard
Now that's a lot of buying!  :)  As for LFLF, we got onions, cookies, sweet corn, tomatoes, & green peppers.   The onions were sauteed with a ham steak today & the tomatoes will be part of BLT sandwiches this week.  Some of the sweet corn will go into a Mexican meatloaf recipe!  Use your imagination, but the recipe includes taco seasoning, corn, black beans, salsa, with cheese & picante sauce on top.  Instead of rice or oatmeal, use a little crushed tortilla chips .........

Thursday At The Ambridge Farmers' Market!

LFLF Brought This Home From The Ambridge Farmers' Market!
Thunderstorms for the last couple of nights prevented LFLF from posting our finds from the Ambridge Farmers' Market ........ so, we'll just get caught up today!   Actually, rain was threatening on Thursday when we shopped after work .... luckily for the market, it held off.  White peaches, summer squash, breads, anise biscotti, & lemon basil came home.  We also got the tail end of the stuffed cabbage rolls (yea!), but didn't get them into this picture.  Farmer Becky suggested putting the lemon basil in a vase and that's what we did ----- here it is with our own Black-Eyed Susans sprinkled in.   Great idea while you use the basil!

The blog has a sidebar listing of what's in season, so here are some close-ups of several of the fruits & veggies that can be found right now at market!
